Srikkanth hails Tendulkar’s effort

Chennai: National cricket selection panel chairman Krishnamachari Srikkanth said here on Friday Sachin Tendulkar’s epic 175 against Australia in Hyderabad on Thursday was one of the greatest ODI innings he had seen.

Srikkanth told The Hindu: “India was chasing a mammoth 351 and Sachin almost single-handedly took the side to the doorstep of victory. At least for Tendulkar’s sake, India should have won the game.” The former India captain added, “It was not only about the quality of Sachin’s shot-making during his innings and how he marshalled a daunting chase under the lights. His commitment, focus, and passion came through forcefully. These are qualities that have enabled him play international cricket for 20 years. He is still hungry, still fit.”

Srikkanth said the manner in which Tendulkar coped with pressure over the years has been extraordinary.

“Each time he walks out to bat, India is expectant. Every innings he has played, there has been enormous pressure on him to succeed. He has handled the stress in an exceptional manner.” — Special Correspondent
