Tirupur: People staged road roko at Uthukuli near here on Friday following the death of a five-year-old girl Monisha, from Salem, at the additional primary health centre functioning in the area. Uthukuli Town Panchayat chairman R. Kumar of CPI (M), who led the agitation, said that a detailed enquiry should be conducted into the incident as there were no doctors at the additional PHC when the girl was brought with high fever. “Moreover, there were no ambulances at the PHC to take her to any of the referral hospitals,” he alleged. Deputy Director of Health Senthil Kumar said that the girl was brought dead to the hospital. However, he admitted that the only medical officer posted at the health centre was away attending a government-sponsored medical camp in the nearby Thalapathy village. Being an additional PHC, medical officers had not been posted round-the-clock, he added. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
