DINDIGUL: A total of 1,700 self-help groups (SHG) would be started in the district this year. Farm workers who registered their names with National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme will be roped into establish 750 SHGs. A sum of Rs.50 crore had been allotted to release funds to these groups during this financial year, according to Collector M. Vallalar. He was inaugurating a coordination meeting for bankers, SHGs and NGOs here on Friday. Equal importance will be given for women at villages and people residing at slums in urban areas. While rural women will be engaged in creating 350 self-help groups, women in slum areas will open 600 groups. Entrepreneurial training will be given to members of new groups. Existing groups that completed six months will get revolving fund shortly. A total of 750 groups in rural areas and 450 groups in urban areas will get revolving funds. Besides, two-year-old SHGs will have economic assistance up to Rs.5 lakhs. Three per cent quota was given for the disabled. NGOs and bankers should guide SHGs in improving their business activities and prompt repayment of loan. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
