IT IS OFFICIAL: Corporation workers putting up a board on a lamp post on the Marina on Friday. CHENNAI: Following the recent ban on playing cricket on the Marina Beach the Chennai Corporation on Friday placed 10 signboards conveying the decision. The boards, giving the information in Tamil and English, said that playing cricket on the beach has been banned. The ban followed a decision taken after a joint meeting of senior officials belonging to the State government, Police department and Chennai Corporation. Even as the boards were affixed on lamp posts by the civic body employees, groups of youngsters played cricket on the wet sands of the beach, which was quite deserted. Some of the boys said that the ban was only on the service road and not on the sand and that they were not disturbing anybody. “We play the game on Sunday mornings. On working days we seldom come here. None of us damage any public property. We ensure that we do not disturb visitors too,” said Senthil of Triplicane. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
