HYDERABAD: Traffic movement was disrupted on Friday on the busy thoroughfares in twin cities following processions taken out by political parties to file nominations in connection with the GHMC elections on November 23. Chaos prevailed at Khairatabad, Bollarum, Malkajgiri, Secunderabad and a few areas in old city when contestants took out massive processions from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for filing nominations on Friday, the last day for receipt of nomination papers. Though police put up barricades to ensure smooth flow of traffic, activists parked their vehicles on the main roads disrupting vehicular movement. Traffic police used cranes to tow-away vehicles in some areas. The situation was even worse on the busy stretch on the flyover at Begumpet airport to St. Ann’s High School in Secunderabad when a lorry rammed into a concrete blocks placed on the Begumpet flyover in the early hours of Friday. Office-goers were mainly affected with the bumper-to-bumper traffic at Begumpet, Rasoolpura, Paradise and YMCA Secunderabad and surrounding areas. “Motorists were not allowed on the flyovers in order to reduce chaos,” Begumpet Traffic Sub-Inspector D. Ramulu said. He said traffic was resorted after the lorry was shifted from the flyover with the help of four cranes around 10.10 a.m. Lorry load of sand was also sprinkled on the flyover as grease and brake oil from the lorry spilled on the road made it very slippery. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
