‘Lawyers contributed to survival of democracy’

KOCHI: Legal fraternity can be proud to have contributed for the survival of democracy in the country, Justice R. Basant of the Kerala High Court, has said.

In his inaugural address at the 13th all-India moot court competition for the T. S. Venketeswara Iyer Memorial ever rolling trophy at the Government Law College here on Friday, Mr. Basant said that the survival of democracy was the greatest achievement of the Indian polity. He said that law colleges have produced outstanding law fraternity for the country.

Mr. Basant said that the nation requires excellent judges, lawyers, and academicians to strengthen the rule of law. Pointing out that the law colleges and universities were able to claim only the second best of students, he stressed the need to attract the best for pursuing legal education. He said that this was not the place for the mediocre but the best.

Urging the law students to strive for excellence, Mr. Basant said that the journey for excellence should start from law colleges and universities. Law colleges today have a fundamental duty to prepare students for tomorrow’s Bench, he said. S. Usha, Principal of Government Law College, presided over the meeting. She said that 20 teams will battle in the competition. N. K. Jayakumar, Vice-Chancellor of National University of Advanced Legal Studies, D. Pappachan, Principal District and Sessions judge, Ernakulam, R. Vijayabalan, former Principal of Government Law College, C. A. Vijayachandran, vice-president of the Parent Teachers Association, and Abhishek Kurian, chairman of the college union, spoke.

The final of the moot court competition will be held on Sunday.
