They were proceeding to court for giving testimony in an attempt to murder case

Tiruvannamalai: Eleven persons travelling in a van to attend court for giving testimony in an attempt-to-murder case were injured when a rival group hurled country-made bombs at them near Cheyyar on Friday.

Real estate dealer

When Krishnan, a real estate dealer from Punjai Arasanthangal village near Cheyyar and others were on their way to the Cheyyar judicial magistrate court, a car intercepted their vehicle at the Sholavaram junction.

Soon, the occupants of the car surrounded the van and started attacking the occupants with knives and hurling bombs at them.

Mr. Krishnan, Perumal, Murugesan, A. Kumar, Udhayakumar, Panchatcharam, Ganesan, Babu, Selvam, K. Kumar and driver Nethaji were injured.

On receiving information from Mr. Krishnan, the police reached the spot and sent the injured to the Cheyyar Government Hospital.

Five persons — Nithyanandham, John, Sivasakthi, Murugan and Raja — who allegedly belong to a gang that allegedly carried out the attack were arrested from the Puliyarampakkam irrigation tank in a swift search operation.

The police perceive the attack as an attempt by another real estate group based at Kancheepuram to settle scores with Mr. Krishnan.
