Caring for others

W.A.F. HOPPER

January 30 was observed as World Anti-leprosy Day.

Persons Affected with Leprosy (PAL) at the grass root level need help and parents, teachers and community leaders should be trained to identify a PAL.

Wellesley Cosby Bailey, founded the Leprosy Mission (TLM) in 1874. He saw people suffering with this disease at Ambala, Haryana. In India, TLM runs 25 hospitals. About 1000 new patients register every year for MDT treatment. On an average 2,25,000 outpatients are treated in the hospitals. Under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme, the TLM conducts surveys to identify and treat PALs. Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) provides vocational training and has initiated an Income Generating Activity too. Recently, a housing scheme was launched to provide houses for the patients.
