Young World

Valentine's day

"Be my valentine," we say
Spreading fragrance in the air.
Gifts and flowers we shower
They search for scrap beneath the tower.
We devour with great zeal
They go without a
square meal.
The finest of clothes we wear
Standing almost naked,
they stare.
Valentine was a great saint
And none of us is.
He loved children
How many follow his example
Sharing with them
joys and laughter.
When I see the
little hands toil,
Their small feet in muddy soil.
My eyes with tears build,
With compassion,
a web of guilt.
Nameera Baig,

X, St. George's Girls Grammar School, Hyderabad.
