In the courts of law

VIKRAM RAMAKRISHNAN

The ability to speak confidently and knowledgeably on any subject could well be the mark of a good lawyer.

Awaiting justice...

Did you know when the profession of Advocacy originated? Well it was in ancient Greece about 3000 years ago that the state decided that the interest of its citizens should be protected. So persons with ability were asked to be the spokesman of citizens who were accused of offences. Thus did advocacy become a profession.

Over the centuries people and their interests or stakes have expanded and so too have laws. These laws play an important role in maintaining stability in society. Thus the role of lawyers has become very important in modern society in protecting the interests of the common man.

As a lawyer myself, I have come to realise that one needs to develop certain skills in order to become a good lawyer. Legal education in our country is inadequate and does not help students of law to develop the skills necessary to become good lawyers. To put it bluntly getting a degree in a law is just a formality, the real game begins when one practises law.

To be a good lawyer the most essential is of course hard work. Then, one needs to be a good public speaker, to be able to put across the case of the client clearly to the judge. If any of you are aiming to be a lawyer, try to participate in as many public-speaking opportunities as possible. It can be anything, be it a speech in your class about your favourite hero or movie. Try to push yourself and participate. No matter what you say, it is the ability to stand in front of a crowd and address them with confidence that really matters. This will definitely help you in making a success of your career.

Another important point is that one has to be up to date with all current events as this would help in understanding how society really works. The other aspects which one really needs to have to be a good lawyer is the ability to listen to the client with patience and try to understand the case well. Fame does not come easily in this profession. So patience and hard work determine your success. The profession of advocacy is challenging and exciting. Our country needs more lawyers with ability and honesty to protect the rights of our citizens.

There may be many voices that suggest that the system does not deliver justice, well that is not true. The system has the skeleton, it needs young men and women to give it flesh and blood and this will give the system more life. We all need that.
