Seeing red

Tasting tomatoes in a different way... the "Tomatina" festival, Spain

Revellers literally painted the Spanish town Bunol red as they pelted each other with ripe plum tomatoes in the annual "Tomatina" festival. For an hour, the town's main street was a blur of flying fruit as Spaniards and visitors hurled tomatoes and cavorted in pools of puree.

At the stroke of twelve, a rocket signals a procession of six trucks, each bearing 20 tons of tomatoes. The huge piles of tomatoes are tipped out along with a few hapless passengers and partygoers dive into the fruit, flinging them all around. When no whole tomatoes remain, handfuls of juice, pips and skin are thrown. Compiled by R. KRITHIKA
