Sound of music

SUNAYANA ROY

Srijon, the eclectic Kolkata organisation of painters, dramatists, singers, filmmakers, photographers and poets has of late been hosting a monthly show called "Music from Distant Shores: A Tribute to Rock Legends of the 60s". A group of people gather on the Srijon rooftop at Lake Terrace, South Kolkata, to listen to the sounds that defined rock music on the fourth Friday of every month.

The programme is divided into two sections: first the presenter introduces the band of the evening; along with the music they have played. After a break a live band selected from the city bands plays music of the featured band and some of its own original music.

The event's greatest contribution as many think is the opportunity it gives the performing bands not to only show their capabilities but also to perform the kind of music they would prefer to focus on.

The idea of a rock show focusing on one band was a refreshing change. The presentation before the live music exposes one to know more about the featured band, its ideals and music. The music was for an audience that "actually listened to — and enjoyed — the music."
