SANGEETH KURIAN

The students will blog and create their own web pages.

On the information superhighway: A blog page for their thoughts and ideas

From September, the students of PSVPM School in Konni, Pathanamthitta, will have their own websites. The school is currently in the process of setting up ‘Smart Blog,’ a platform for sharing knowledge and other relevant information between students, teachers, alumni and members of the management.Dubbed as the first ever customised blog for schools, the project is implemented in association with Aarthika technologies, a subsidiary of Rain Concert knowledge manag ement solutions.

The medium will enable teachers to post assignments on the website, initiate discussion on topics of contemporary relevance and help children break-free from their addiction for computer games.

“Computer operations in nearly 95 per cent of the students are limited to playing games,” said Abhilash R., Chief Executive Officer, Rain Concert. “Children either do not know the potential of Information Communication Technology or they are not being guided properly.” Under ‘Smart Blog’ each user will have a domain name giving the user a personalised feeling. Postings on the blog can be made from any where including a hotel room, home, café or a school.

“Apart from value addition in education, the blog can be used by the school management for publication of information on school policies, events and programmes,” said Mr. Abhilash.

“Blogging helps students to think and write more critically. Through blogs students will be able to express their thoughts clearly.

Thinking better

It also helps to improve their self-confidence,” he said.According to Abhilash unlike Orkut, a popular online community, the content of ’Smart Blog’ can be monitored. A person assigned by the school management will monitor the postings and only those approved by him/her will be posted. Thus the person entrusted with the task of monitoring the content will have complete control over the system.

The postings will also be restricted to users from the school alone.Teachers can also have their own pages that provide information and links on various subjects to the students.

They can post information on topics they cover in class, offer further explanations and even post topics which they do not get time to cover in class. Students can then look for this additional information to help them when they are working on their homework.

What is a blog?

The term ‘weblog’ came into existence in 1997. The phrase was later truncated into a blog. A blog is a website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order. Blogs can be of any topic of interest ranging from studies, politics, food and local news. They are personal in nature and reflect a person’s values and interests.

A typical blog combines text, images, links to other blogs and web pages.

Since its popularisation, blogs have been providing voice to the voiceless in cyber space. According to the ‘Blog Herald’ till May 2006, there were over 100 million blogs in the world.
